Phone call alarm vs alarm apps: which actually gets you up?

Updated: October 9, 2026 · Pricing as of July 2026

A phone call alarm rings your phone as a real incoming call at the time you set, so you have to answer it rather than tap snooze. This page compares an alarm that calls you with a regular alarm app, and when each one makes sense.

Alarms are free; the snooze loop is the problem

Built-in and app alarms cost nothing and work fine for many people. The friction starts when snooze becomes automatic. A 2025 study in Scientific Reports analyzing over 3 million nights from 21,000+ smartphone users found 55.6% of sleep sessions ended with the snooze button, pressed on average 2.4 times per morning; ~45% of users snoozed on more than 80% of mornings (source). A University of Notre Dame study found 57% of participants were habitual snoozers (source).

When each option makes sense

When an alarm app is enough

Free, always available, and fine if you wake on the first ring and do not fall into a snooze loop. Keep using an alarm when missing a few minutes does not matter.

When a reminder call works better

Heavy sleepers, habitual snooze-loopers, waking a family member on another phone, or moments where you want a real ringing call. An alarm call is that incoming ring: you answer it, or you let it go to voicemail.

Reminder calls vs alarm apps FAQ

Why do I sleep through my alarm?

Many people snooze without thinking. A 2025 study in Scientific Reports found 55.6% of sleep sessions ended with the snooze button, pressed on average 2.4 times per morning (source), and a University of Notre Dame study found 57% of participants were habitual snoozers (source). The alarm is not broken: the snooze loop is.

Can a wake-up call keep calling until I answer?

On On Time Call Focus, Keep Calling Until Answered can retry up to 5 times after the initial call (6 dials total, quota permitting), including after voicemail. On Support, Call Until Answered can retry up to 3 times with 5-minute gaps, including after voicemail. Starter does not include automatic unanswered retries. That is different from a one-tap snooze on an alarm.

Can I schedule a wake-up call for someone else?

Yes. On Time Call Support and Pro plans let you send reminder calls to saved recipients. An alarm on your phone can only wake the device it sits on.

Are phone calls harder to miss than alarms?

A ringing call is harder to miss than a familiar alarm for many people, because answering it takes a deliberate step. Silent mode and Do Not Disturb can still block the call. Save the caller ID as a contact and allow it through the phone's Focus mode or Do Not Disturb if you want it to ring.

Do wake-up calls work if my phone is on Do Not Disturb?

Standard Do Not Disturb typically silences unknown callers unless you allow calls from contacts or repeat callers. Save the On Time Call number in your contacts (or enable repeat callers) to improve the chance the call rings through. Calls do not always break through every DND setup.
